Chained in Chicago, 24 Hours, June 27-28

This year's chain off was quite an experience and I'm so happy that I took advantage of the opportunity to participate since it was so close to home.  It was quite different from chain off 2007 since I battled with rough weather and a longer duration of time, but I was fortunate enough to have other people share the experience with me.  This year I paid closer attention to people's reactions when I mentioned that I was planning to be chained for 24 hours straight.  Their reaction was always, "24 HOURS?!", but little do they realize that 24 hours is nothing compared to the lifetime some dogs have to endure on the end of a chain.  With this longer period of time, I was able to experience the harsh and fickle weather conditions that many dogs face each day.  While being in the presence of strong storms, hail, and a cold and windy rain that lasted all night, I got a taste of the reality of the forgotten backyard dog.

At least we as humans realize what is going on when it storms, while animals, on the other hand, do not understand the origins of those loud claps of thunder, which makes the experience more terrifying than uncomfortable and annoying for them.  Also, while I was chained up that Saturday, I noticed that I beckoned dogs with all of my might to come towards me so I could pet them.  I was so desperate for there cute lovin' that I bribed them with non-existent treats and peels from the orange that I had just eaten.  This shows me how strong a dog's social desires are and that any living being on the end of a chain yearns for some love and attention.

Not only did I come to understand the lives of chained dogs more, but I also got to meet some of the most wonderful, kind hearted, caring, and selfless people that I have ever met.  All of the participants, who put their effort in this event, fully displayed their care for other beings who are silently crying for our help.  They don't need a "thank you" or a pat on the back because their activism is fueled by their love for all living beings, no matter what species.
