There's a group of animal activists that's promising to stage a protest over the weekend by chaining themselves to the Memorial Coliseum.
They're protesting the city's dog chaining laws.
They are using the death of a dog last September as their rallying point.
PETA is in support of this protest.
CORPUS CHRISTI --Dozens of animal rights activists lined the streets near McCaughan Park Sunday in a "Chain Off" campaign to be a voice for Shepp, a German Shepherd who starved to death at the hand of his abusers.
The dog was found last year, malnourished and dehydrated with injuries to his neck, and protruding bones.
Days later, he died.
Shepp supporter Ann Russelo told KRIS 6 News, "He passed away and I felt very strongly about that and I thought for a neighborhood to allow this to go on for as long as it did in lieu of Hurricane Ike that was preposterous."
Back in September of 2008, four counts of animal cruelty were filed against Shepp's owners, Daniel and Norma Luna...
The charges included not feeding Shepp properly, not providing sufficient water, providing no medical attention for the dog's injuries, and allowing Shepp to be tied up at an unoccupied property.
A court document obtained by 6 News shows that Daniel Luna plead guilty to the charges and accepted a plea deal of one year probation with various fines.
These protesters say that is not enough.
Russelo asserted, "I don't believe justice was served. I would've liked to have seen them at least have to volunteer or to have been made to work in a shelter."
Many of these animal rights activists believe Nueces County should be more strict with animal cruelty cases.
Another Shepp supporter, Linda McNamee told 6 News, "They're just throwaways. I've just been sick since I've moved out here from northern states that pay more attention to pets."
But, until the law changes here, these activists can only offer words of advice.
"If you do not want an animal, then you need to not own one. If you cannot take care of one, please don't own one," pleaded Russelo.
