Chaining your dog in the Arizona sun could be a death sentence -- and not just for the animal

DDB stockThis should be a no-brainer after the heat of the last couple of days, but many will take no heed and they will still chain their dogs outside, in the sun, with minimum or no shade, and often without adequate water. Any way you cut it, that is just plain dumb and irresponsible. But that is the plight of some animals, many of which “sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius.” according to the non-profit group, Dogs Deserve Better.

Dogs Deserve Better was founded in 2002 by Tammy Grimes, according to DDB’s local representative, Danielle Waechter. Grimes changed her name in 2008 to Tamira Ci Thayne, which means “Peaceful Dog Warrior” in a combination of Czech, Welsh and Gaelic.

RebeccaThe protest (see pictures) was to try and demonstrate as close as possible the conditions under which animals suffer when left out in the Arizona sun. It was also an attempt to raise the awareness of this problem which Schneider thinks isn’t viewed as important. Waechter is surpised that more people can’t see that the situation that exists in yards all around them.

Many attendees to the 4th of July event brought their dogs with them, and there was limited shade and water for the animals. When our three protesters approached several of these families, in many cases they were met with a hostile reception. It was clear that the summer heat and humidity was affecting these dogs and they never should have been brought out to spend the entire day in that kind of weather. It actually replicated being chained outside, but at least with companionship.

I asked Danielle and Rebecca to put themselves in the animals’ “paws” and tell me just how it felt to be chained to a tree in over 100 degree heat for 12 hours. Rebecca answered that, although there is no way to really get in their “paws,” her first thought was how terrible it must be to know that you will “live this life day after day, year after year! I would lose my mind.” Danielle commented on the loneliness of the dogs, how it must feel wondering “if he was going to get walked or fed.” It was so hot she eventually had to move into the shade.

DanielleAnd then there is the other problem in a potential death sentence. According to Dogs Deserve Better, “in the period from October 2003 through August 2008, there were at least 266 children killed or seriously injured by chained dogs across the country.” DDB says that being unsocialized with humans, they become very territorial, and will protect their space against any intruder, even a 2-year old.

The key word here is unsocialized, and when you mix that with a 100+ degree Arizona temperature, and a water bowl that has long since dried up in mid afternoon, you have a clear case of animal abuse and the potential for a tragedy, should someone unknowingly come within range of this desperate, horribly neglected animal.

Rebecca Schneider, Danielle Waechter, Laura Whitman and Tamira Ci Thayne join me in urging you to help stop this abusive treatment of chaining dogs as a means to contain them, and pass the word around. If they aren’t a part of the family, they should be, as are the pets in most animal loving households. Your dogs, cats, bunnies, and who knows what, crave your love and deserve it. The irony of this situation is that they have as much or more love to give in return.
