ASHEVILLE
— Kristen Ort, 19, of Weaverville, tied herself with a rope
to a rail in front of a downtown grocery yesterday.
She
did it to show her love for dogs.
She
said she would remain tethered in front of the Greenlife Grocery
for eight hours to protest the practice of chaining dogs up for
long periods of time.
Ort
was one of 108 people in 35 states to join in a national protest,
Chain Off 2007, according to the organizers’ Web site. The
event was sponsored by the Pennsylvania-based charity Dogs Deserve
Better.
“I’ve
had a headache, I’m tired and I’m bored,” she
said after five hours of the protest. “I can’t imagine
a dog doing it for its entire life.”
Ort
believes people should keep their pets inside and unrestrained.
Ort refused to say how many pets she owns, but she said she has
“a lot.”
Before
her protest, she received e-mails of opposition: Most said her
actions would send a negative message that dogs belong in cages
rather than on a chain, she said.
Others
said dogs would be better off dead than in cages.
But
Asheville resident Tony Fogleman said Ort “is doing great
stuff. “It’s not as harsh as PETA (People for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals) or as aggressive.”

Woman
chooses dog’s life in protest

ASHEVILLE
— A Weaverville woman will chain herself to a pole for eight
hours outside a grocery store next week to protest the way some
people treat dogs.
“It
is kind of a nutty thing,” said 19-year-old Kristen Ort.
“But it’s for a good cause.”
On
July 7, Ort will sit outside Greenlife Grocery on Merrimon Avenue
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with Lady, a Dalmatian-chow-lab mix, as
part of Chain Off 2007, a national protest of leaving dogs chained
for their entire lives. She’s hoping to find a good home
for Lady and raise awareness about treating dogs humanely.
Almost
100 people in 32 states and Canada will chain themselves to doghouses
during the protest. The nonprofit Dogs Deserve Better has organized
the event for five years.
This
year is the largest protest yet, said Tammy S. Grimes, the group’s
founder. She plans to chain herself to a doghouse in Atlanta for
29 hours.
“The
emotions are very strong when you are living on a chain,”
Grimes said. “I really identify with the dogs when I do
it.”
The
group encourages people to make dogs part of the family instead
of relegating them to pens and chains in the backyard.
Ort
will have a dog collar around her neck with a chain attached to
a pole. A table with information about the protest and local dogs
up for adoption at All Creatures Great and Small in Hendersonville
will help the public understand the event.
“I
am a little nervous,” she said. “I am not sure what
people are going to say.”
