Dogs
Deserve Better is Housebreaking Porky
Porky
is such a sweet little dog! You would wonder who would ever put
him on the end of a chain! I'm very grateful that his caretaker,
after some initial resistance, called me back and discussed the
situation with me. Porky was outside, and next to him was his mother,
an all white poodle mix. They had completely open houses, and were
just freezing out there in this weather! A friend and volunteer
Kim had called me about them, distraught because she had to drive
by them 3 times a day every day for 6 years.
The
caretaker said that Porky's mother was already housetrained, and
so he would take her directly into the home, but Porky went all
over the house if allowed in. I offered to housetrain Porky, and
he agreed, saying that he wanted him back when he was trained.
So
I went out before I brought him home (I learned my lesson from the
first experience!) and bought a crate and some other supplies for
him. It's been a week, and he is already almost housebroken. He
has very few behavioural difficulties, he just loves to sit on my
lap or snuggle up with me on the couch. He knows his name, and comes
gladly when called, and his little tail wags like crazy when he
is spoken to. As you can see, above, he is already spoiled rotten
by all in this household! He loves his crate so much that he lays
in it most of the day even when the door is hanging wide open. I
will definitely send it home with him so that he has that security,
and hopefully his toilet habits will not slip back.
Kim
came over and helped me bath and groom him the next day after I
brought him home. I haven't heard from his caretaker yet, but I've
already had plenty of offers to take such a sweet little guy. I'm
sure he will be safe and loved if he finds a new home.
Update
on Porky...he is back home. After a bout with worms, he is now doing
fine again, and the caretakers seem very happy with him. He and
his mother, Minnie, are warm and safe in the house. He still loves
his crate, and spends a lot of time sleeping in it.
Now,
only 200,000,000 more to go! (I hope this is an exaggeration...)
