Man Kills Brown Bear Threatening His Dog

Via Anchorage Daily News

May 15, 2007

The man came outside his home in a residential part of Sterling on Saturday evening to find the bear squaring off against his dog, area biologist Jeff Selinger said. He shot it once, and it died nearby. Officials are treating the incident as an allowable defense of life and property.

The bear, perhaps three or four years old, matches the description of one that has been seen eating unsecured garbage around Sterling. Its death is a reminder that people everywhere on the Kenai Peninsula need to secure potential food sources, Selinger said.

"A lot of times people have been doing everything right but they end up with a problem because of the way the bear was trained somewhere else," he said.

The bear was the second grizzly shot on the Kenai this spring. The first died in an encounter with a hiker who was searching for antlers near Ninilchik.
