A Zanesville man was arrested and charged in connection with the death of a dog on Pine street on Thursday afternoon.

Authorities charged 55-year old Dwight Thompson with three misdemeanors.

Zanesville Police Captain Mike Baker says Thompson went to a neighbors home and while the dog was chained outside took a bat and hit the dog several times.

"He was arrested by officers and taken to the Zanesville City jail. He's charged with killing or injuring an animal, aggravated trespassing, aggravated menacing. All three misdemeanor's." Baker said the dog had to be euthenized as a result of its injuries.

The owner of the dog was shaken up and talked about the ordeal and said Thompson told her and the authorities that the dog tried biting him, which the owner said isn't true. "He said the dog always tried to bite him, but Harley never bit anybody. That dog is the best dog you ever seen. The dude had no reason walking through our yard" said Bobbie Harwick.

Thompson appeared in court this morning and plead not guilty and was being held on a 14-hundred-dollar bond.
