A Dog A Day

Day 1: June 5, 2010.

Sheena Dog #1. DDB supporter Heather Stoykovich-Boring in Pennsylvania sent me a Craig's list posting of a little mixed breed dog on a chain. I agreed to foster the dog if Heather could pick him up. Turns out they still have six more dogs on a chain in Dillstown, PA. Ugh! Sheena appears to be a King Charles Spaniel mix. She is very small, weighing only about 20 lbs., and we're sure will quickly find a home!

Day 2: June 6, 2010.

Hailey and Kilo Dogs #2-3. In January 2010, I was charged with trespassing for providing food, water, and straw to two underweight dogs in Lilly, PA. The charges were subsequently dropped on appeal. Dog caretakers Jason and Krystal Cann came to me and Dogs Deserve Better in June with the desire for their dogs to be a success story. So on June 6, 2010, everyone got their miracle. View the page for the case at this link.

Dog #4. Penned for 7 years. I received a call from vet tech, Teresa, from my Vet clinic. This clinic is very supportive of the efforts and cause of DDB. Teresa informed me that an owner of a Lab mix wanted to schedule an appointment the following Saturday to have their dog put to sleep. She promptly called me sensing that something didn't seem right in the care of this dog and asked if I would be interested in rescuing her. She told me the address of the owner and “ding, ding, ding…” bells went off in my head. This is the dog I received an anonymous tip about and has been on my list of DDB dogs for sometime now. I replied with an adamant “yes”. I had never seen this dog, as her pen is covered by sheets of corrugated metal and the pen only slightly in view from an adjacent side street.

Kalli now has a new lease on life and will be fostered with my wife and I until her forever home finds her.

Simon NE

Simon NEDog #5. Meet Simon, a darling little 5 year old Shih tzu who came to us intact and with only a rabies vaccination since puppyhood. It's not the typical dog we get at Dogs Deserve Better. He wasn't chained, and he wasn't in an outdoor kennel. But he was in a small indoor pen for the past two years!

You see, Simon has a problem. A biting problem. He was surrendered to a local vet after biting a five year old boy....who hit him with a baseball ball! I'm sure that is why he spent life in a cage. Who knows what types of abuse this dog has suffered. The one thing we know is that he is damaged psychologically. Along with being a unpredictable biter, he also has a compulsive disorder. He spent a week licking, sucking, and nudging the ear of one of my own dogs. Poor Karla!

Simon has been fully vetted, but we are in the process of checking him for pain, and getting a thyroid test and some blood work done to rule out any other problems. Once that has been done, he will be working with a wonderful trainer pro bono to help us rehabilitate Simon. I don't expect quick results. He is very "damaged". But I do expect him to recover most, if not all of his well being.

Simon will now jump on our laps, give us kisses, and let us pet him. Although we do have a few "battle wounds" we are willing to tolerate it until the time he can go to a family of his own, and be respected and treated like he always should have been.

Thanks to Dogs Deserve Better for vetting this little dog, and caring enough to make sure he gets the help that he needs!

Day 5: June 9, 2010.

DumasDog #6-7."Dumas" is a White German Shepherd mix that was living his life alone, chained in a dark shed. His caretaker is a truck driver and would leave for days and weeks at a time. "Dumas" was left with large amounts of food and water, but was isolated and alone. He could only step a couple of feet out of his shed and could not enjoy the green grass and sunshine that surrounded him. It is also a daunting task to protect all of that food from raccoons, possum and even coyotes, especially when chained and unable to defend yourself. DDB was contacted, we drove 4 hours to Southern Missouri to get him relinquished.

—Melody Whitworth, DDB Rep - Columbia, Missouri

Max

Max after

"Max" was chained with a collar so tight, we had to cut it off! We were told he was "wild". He was living in dirt and feces. He would constantly tip his water bowl over because he had very little room to move around the tree the anchored him. When "Max" was released from this tight collar and restraints of a chain, he instantly became a fun loving, ball catching, couch potato! All "Max" needed was some exercise to expel his energy, as all dogs do, especially a young, lovable Labrador Retriever!

Day 6: June 10, 2010.

Brandi

Brandi afterDog #8. I received a call from a San Bernardino County Probation Officer about a week ago regarding this dog. She explained that when she took on a new probation case and did a home inspection, she noticed Brandi crated in a back room. Brandi was living her entire life in a small crate in a back room of this house. She was so upset and called me and the Humane Society immediately.. Brandi has a sever case of dermatitis mange but is being treated for this by the Humane Society. The Humane Society's Cruelty Team has been working to get the dog healthy and talking with the owners to allow DDB to re-home her. Why they didn't remove her is beyond me??? The HS also installed a zip line for Brandi so that she can be outside, but from what I understand, they would rarely take her out of her crate.

The family agreed to allow DDB to get Brandi and give her a better life than the life in that small area and from being tethered outside with no protection from other animals. The family explained they didn't even want a dog and since they were planning a move, they kept her crated because they didn't want a mess and didn't really want to deal with a dog. They explained that the yard is not fenced and was to much effort to walk and play with her.

The original plan was for me to pick her up Friday morning and take her to my vet and then the foster family in LA. WELL, this morning I got a call from the Probation Officer and she was in shambles. She explained that she along with CPS had arrived at the home to remove one of the children from the residence and the family has left the residence without notice and she couldn't find the dog. She looked in the back and it looked like Brandi broke free from her tether. While we were talking, she spotted Brandi digging in some trash near by and she was able to catch her. The Humane Society took her in and had the Vet check her and provide more medication for mange, shots, a physical, and do a temperament test for me.

Since I can not transport Brandi until Friday to my foster in Los Angeles, a vet has offered to kennel her for a few day's with no cost to us. Which is such a financial relief at this point..

She is the sweetest girl. She is a bit head shy and nervous but who wouldn't be after living this long in a crate.. She will be in great hands in her new foster home. The foster mom just called and is really excited to get her on Friday. Brandi will finally be able to run around a yard and play with 2 foster brothers. I can not wait to see her completely free... I will upload pictures on Friday of Brandi in her new foster home.

Rico before

Rico

Dog #9
I received a call about installing some fencing for a chained dog and the day that I went to measure the lot for the fence, a young man came walking up on us and asked what we were doing. I told him and gave him my brochure and he asked if we could put up a fence for his chained dog too? After I finished where I was, I walked over to his yard where I met this beautiful Belgian Malinois named "General Lee" He had no shelter, he was just tied to a tree and starving for attention and limping on his rear leg. This we came to learn was a soft tissue injury probably caused from getting tangled in the chain. I spoke to the guy and told him the General Lee needed to see a vet and he said he could not afford that, well ... that is unacceptable. I explained to him the cost of future care for a dog like this would be very expensive and he began to see the light. He signed him over to DDB and agreed in writing not to ever chain another dog. So here is General Lee, now named Rico, rescued from the chain! He's now safe and sound in his foster home in Illinois. Many thanks to all who helped him. He so deserved a better life.

Day 8: June 12, 2010.

ChanceDog #10-11. He was a chained dog in TN whose neighbor witnessed the owner beating and kicking him on several occasions. He would get off his chain sometimes and run to this neighbor's yard because the man would feed him. After a couple of times of Chance coming into his yard, the man decided to contact a rescuer who came and took Chance. He was then sent to a kennel that a woman ran at her house, but there were 50 dogs there and not the best conditions.

I had Chance transported to me and I am working on getting him into a rescue or forever home now. This boy has had a rough life but is a total sweetheart. I have attached pics.

Nick before

Nick afterDog #12. Meet Nick (his free name). Nick is approx. 1 1/2 yrs old, he was given as a birthday gift to a little boy. The parents could not housetrain him or deal with his energy so outside on the chain he went. The neighbors were feeding him, and one the ladies is who contacted DDB after they convinced the owners to give him a chance at a better life. The police had also been called several times because of the living condtions and constant barking.

He joined our home on Friday June 11. He has signs of a tight collar that left a very bad outline and rash...at least we were able to save him before the collar grew in. His ears have fly bites on, and he is very leary of taking treats out of our hands. Seems like he is more used to the scavenger instinct of eating off the ground.

Now, and forever he is enjoying an indoor life with water, food, love and toys. He is not barking all the time now and he smiles. He loves being social and seems to be catching up on much needed R&R . We think he is catching on to indoor life very well.

Dog #13-15. Sabrina the chained momma dog, and 2 of her puppies. There have been now 8 dogs total rescued from a trailer park in Florence, KY. Sabrina is a young flat-coat retriever who recently gave birth to 8 puppies. The family realized they could not care for Sabrina and her puppies, or 2 other dogs that were there. They were reluctant to give up Sabrina and the last 2 puppies, but after being threatened with eviction, we were given Sabrina and the last 2 puppies.

Sabrina is in a wonderful foster home and is a very lovable, adoptable dog. Her last two puppies Jasmine and Cupid, will no doubt be adopted quickly. Jasmine is the boxer looking puppy, Cupid is the black one and has a heart-shaped spot on her chest. They are at the vet safe and sound tonight and will be going to a foster home tomorrow.

Muddy before

Muddy after
Dog #16.
This is Muddy. I have been working with this family for over a week now. They agreed to relinquish Muddy once I found foster. After spending the day with them and Muddy on 6/9/10, AC came and impounded him after receiving a call from a neighbor regarding his living situation. Muddy was tethered majority of his life and when they took him off the tether when I was there, he was so full of life. Muddy was at the shelter for almost a week. I was not allowed to adopt him until the owners did a "no show" on pick up. I finally got him on Monday, got him neutered and current on shots yesterday and he is resting and relaxing today.

The crack in the fence shown in the first 2 pictures, is why the owners tethered, when I asked had he ever gotten out before being tethered, the answer was no, so it made no since as to why they decided to tether him. The other two are of us on our way home from the vet's office this afternoon.

Dog #17-20. This Saturday, 6/19/10, the owner of 4 dogs (a 3 year old male yellow lab, 3 year old female pit-bull and two 4 month old pit/lab mix pups) will be releasing his dogs over to DDB as he can no-longer take care of the dogs. The dogs currently live all in the same small pen sharing a water and food dish. I was able to meet the dogs and they are all very friendly and looking for love. All dogs do not have shots and will need a vet check-up. Three of the dogs will be transported to a Rescue in Dillsburg, PA and one of the pups which has a hurt right leg will be staying with a temporary foster mom near Philly until something opens up. These are all great dogs and I hope someone can open up their home for them!

Beagle Puppies

Snowball

Snowball 2

Dog #21-27. Diamond/ now Delialah pit puppy- She is safe in a foster home and going to a rescue in about 2 weeks. She had a thin tether with a lock so no one would steal her. She was stuck in the sun and when I pulled up she had dug a hole under the step to try and keep cool in 100 degrees in SC. Her friend Brownie is below. He is safe as of today!!!! He will go to a rescue and on transport July 3rd. The owners did give her to me when most in that neighborhood just want to breed and fight them. Brownie had actually lived chained briefly as an older puppy. She was starting to let him in but the new place she was moving to would not allow big dogs at all. My girls are with Delialah right after I picked her up before her spay!!!! No pit puppies will be born and abused from her!!! She is a real sweetie!!!

Brownie free today!! He was chained and then lived in a small fence/ pen. Now he'll live inside!!!

Stanley & Emily and their 2 surviving puppies were living in a pen for the last 5 years. Emily has had 3 litters. The owners are moving??? They kept there Pomperain in the house but not these poor beagles who were stuck in the heat for much of the day when the sun moved! Now they are being temporarily fostered by Linda & John who really cater
to their pooches. They will go to a Fabulous beagle rescue in NC. The rescue will be taking the whole family on Saturday!!

Snowball came in on our local Hotline 980-DOGS. The woman did not realize how hyper labs can be. She had him penned but he'd escape the pen to visit his mother who lived up the street, so then she chained him . He is so sweet and social. Really loves everybody. His temporary foster said his name should be goofball because he is so silly. He will be going to a great Northern rescue very soon. Thanks to several SC rescuers working together he is free!!

He has a lot of space to run now!!!! I'd like to be fostered in this fenced 5 acre lot!!!

six puppies

Dog #28-35. Poppy (white pit), only one year old, was chained most of her life. She ended up at our local pound with only 24 hours left to live. One of the shelter volunteers contacted me and we immediately went into action. Poppy is safe with me and loving life. Although she is a pit bull, she thinks she is a lap dog. She loves to be held and carried and loves to give kisses. This poor momma dog (brown/white mix) and her eight puppies were left outside to die in the heat. Two of her puppies did not survive but luckily Mary of TN, with the help of Vanessa in OH, was able to pick the whole family up and they are safe at Mary's house. This family is going to need a lot of support. We have started a Chip-In at : http://dogsdeservebetternrv.chipin.com/tn-mom-and-pups

Ben 1

Ben 2

Dog #36. Here's Ben. Savannah and I rescued him today while dropping off clothes at Salvation Army. While I do not know for sure if he was chained or penned, I know that he has been a perpetual outside, uncared for dog. He was a little stray dog searching for water on the street. After not allowing me to catch him, I opened my car door and said, " Do you want to go for a ride?" and he jumped in.

He's a poodle, about 3 years old. Filty, matted, covered with ticks, and with a sore on the side of his face, he certainly did not deserve the life he has endured.

The local wonderful ladies (Thank you, Bridget) at the grooming side of Hobbs Animal Clinic gave him his make over at short notice and the Dr. Newman gave him an exam and some antibiotics for the sore on his face.

I am looking forward to the life Ben will get to enjoy now. Free from mats, ticks, and just generally being uncared for. Keep your head up, Ben. Your future is just beginning!

Buck Bear 1

Buck Bear 2

Buck Bear 3

Buck Bear 4

Buck Bear 5

Buck Bear 6

Dog #37. Acting on a tip, we accessed where Buck and Bear lived from the neighbors property to take pictures. Bear is the bigger dog that was in a pen with a metal shed. It was 95 degree's the day we were there. Bear was wimpering, which isn't unusual for dogs that are penned or chained. I think most times it is anxiety. But not this time. Bear would die that night.

I approached the owners of the dogs and asked to get them groomed and help with a fence so they could be together. She was reluctant at first but finally agreed. The groomer was to call and make an appointment with her. But Bear died before we could get back there. After I found out Bear had died, I asked the groomer to call ASAP, so we could get a better look at Buck. We made plans for Buck to be groomed the next day. But when it came time to go, the owner told the groomer she couldn't drive Buck the mile to her house. So I drove to Wymore and picked him up myself. Boy, am I glad I did! I could tell as I lifted him into the vehicle that he was unusually light.

It took the groomer five solid hours to get that filthy, feces covered and matted coat off that poor boy. We found just a skeleton with skin underneath. He is without any muscle at all, and his legs are very weak and he wobbles when he walks. I took him right to the vet when he was done being groomed. A deputy met me there and took photo's and more information. We all were touched at what a sweet docile boy he was, and what a trooper to stand for five hours when he is so weak. He weighed just 46 lbs. and should have weighed around 80.

The owners have been charged with cruelty. Buck has been confiscated and is in our hands. The sheriff is going to try and pay for his care. I offered for DDB to pay for what they didn't, so they would not put the dog down. Unfortunately, he is heart worm positive. He will need vaccinations and neutered when he is well. The deputy thought they would be able to cover most of his treatment and will let me know next week. Fingers crossed!

Grace 3

Dog #38. MY NAME IS GRACE and I am now UNCHAINED!!! Can you help with my heartworm treatment?

Grace is a wonderful pitty girl that was just removed from her chain. Sara, one of my awesome Freedom Train volunteers, learned about Grace from the owner's neighbor. The neighbor had moved from the property and abandoned Grace on her chain, with no food or water. By the time Sara picked Grace up, she had not eaten in a few days. Grace is now vaccinated and will be spayed asap. She is also heartworm positive and will begin treatment once she has recovered from her spay surgery. She is already in a wonderful foster home, and we are praying hard for the perfect family to come along and adopt Grace once she has completed her heartworm treatment.

DDB contributed $575 to Grace's vetting and heartworm treatment. Please donate today to help us cover the costs associated with this program!

Thank you in advance for your help! Grace is already learning what life is like being FREE!

Day 41: July 15, 2010.

tanner 2

tanner 1

Dog #39. Coco is a great dog. He loves his family and wants to be with them. When I first saw Coco he was chained way out in the back corner of the yard.....it was a very sad sight. When his family came near he was beside himself with excitement. He would jump and the chain would wrap around their legs and the children were afraid. He was working on an embedded collar. They accepted our offer to put up a free fence for Coco but did not want it near the house. After much discussion, they agreed to put it closer, but still not close to the house. I reluctantly agreed thinking it was better than being chained at least. Some wonderful volunteers showed up and the fence was built in one day and finally, Coco was free in his new fenced in 30 x 30 area. But when we left, I felt very sorry for him because I knew he still wanted to be close to his pack. He was closer to them and off the chain, but still very sad. I could see it in his eyes.

When we went back to check on him, they said he had been getting out of the fence somehow and would sit on the deck waiting for them. They'd put him back in and he'd get right back out and head for the house. So we reinforced the fence....top, bottom, gate...but still this houdini dog would figure out a way out so he could be close to his family. I explained to them that what he wanted was to be with them but they said he couldn't come inside anymore because one of the kids has developed allergies and asthma, so Coco had to be banished to his fence. After more escaping, they have chained Coco back up again, in his new fenced in area.

We also noticed some things when visiting Coco and trying to fix his fence.....he didn't always have water and the way he drank, made me think he'd been without for a long, long time on some very hot days. Once he had water but it was green. Also, we noticed had had been being fed jalapino peppers. I don't believe this is a good diet for a dog and told the owners so. Then, the last straw, Coco's food bowl was full of chicken bones and maggotts.....tons of maggots for him to eat. This was when I knew Coco needed a better home. After trying to teach them what Coco needed emotionally, nutritionally, and humanely, it seemed to fall on deaf ears. Finally, they agreed that Coco would be happier living shomewhere with someone that has time for him and can keep him inodoors.

I couldn't find anyone close who would take him into their home or rescue group, so DDB founder Tamira Thayne picked him up on her way home from Chain Off and took him to PA with her. He's proven to be quite the Houdini, and Tami's partner Joe spent hours fixing the fence to keep him in, but they think they finally have him contained. His first weekend in foster care he went to a conference with Tami, rode the elevator, met 100s of people, and became just like any other dog...that's all the longer it takes!

Dogs #40-41. ACE AND FREELY Two young brothers who needed lots of help!

June 11, 2010 - I picked up Ace and Freely from the roadside today, while they dragged their broken tether lines. They are skinny, have balding areas from Demodex Mange, ear infection, and have horrible eye infections that will require their eyelids to be clipped when they get neutered to prevent them from recurring. They wenttoday and got vaccinations, dewormed, skin scrapes, hw tested (thank God they are negative!), and meds for their eyes and ears. Next week they will be neutered and have surgery on their eyelids.
These babies may not feel too great at the moment due to being horribly neglected, but they will soon feel great, and will never have to look at a chain or tether again!!

July 15, 2010 - Ace and Freely are doing GREAT! Freely didn't have to have eye surgery, and Ace's eyes have healed and look beautiful! They have both almost completely cleared of the demodex and their coats shine like glass! Both are now neutered, at healthy weights, and they love playing and can run like the wind. These boys have stolen my heart a little but I will be sending them to a wonderful rescue friend up in Maine on the 24th, so they can find the forever home that they so deserve!!

Thank you DDB for helping so tremendously with their vet bill, as wall as so many others you have helped me with!!! Look at us now!

Foxy 1

Foxy 2

Dogs #42-43. July 18th - Asheville, NC - Foxy began as a Craigslist dog, chained for 2 years, living among rats. The Craigslist post stated that her owner's didn't have time for her and she was lucky to get food and water everyday. Foxy's story soon went 'viral' and a group of rescuers from all over the US pulled together on Facebook and began the rescue efforts. On day one we had a foster and sponsor for her vetting and boarding but we needed to get Foxy from her current owner's home and to her new foster home. On day two we found someone to go get Foxy and take her to the vet but still needed a transport. Day three it all came together, we had two transporters willing to pick Foxy up at the vet and drive her to her new foster home.

Foxy was was given a nice warm bath, as she was covered in fleas, on Wednesday. She was spayed, heartworm tested, de-wormed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped on Thursday and Friday, Foxy - now Bella, made it to her foster home were she will begin her life life with lots of love and freedom from her chain.

For more photos of Foxy/Bella you can visit this link!

Foxy/Bella also has a Chip-In to help cover her vetting, boarding, grooming, and transport at: http://dogsdeservebetternrv.chipin.com/foxy-nc-craigslist-doggie

Bella will available for adoption soon! If you are interested in making Bella a part of your family please contact her foster mommy, Tammy, at noah27545@yahoo.com.

Cary 3

Cary 4

Dogs #45-47. My story of the 6-pack of pups from Barneston continues. While I was there, the soon to be daughter in law that lives next door came over carrying three chihuahua’s. She asked me to take them. She has all her dogs living outside in a mud hole kennel. I have tried to get pictures of her place, but her daughter came out and caught me. It’s surrounded by debris and very hard to get to. So far I’ve not been successful, but I’m hoping when I pick the pups up on Friday I can find a reason to take a photo.

There must be 12 dogs on this property. All Peke’s and Chi’s. None are spayed or neutered from what I can piece together. I’m trying to educate her.

I have put out a public plea for donations and foster homes for these dogs too. So far I have got fosters lined up, but no donations. I still have my fingers crossed.

I have the money to pay for wormer and vaccinations, but will need them spayed and their surgery is scheduled for Monday, pending your permission.

Barneston 6

Barneston 6

Barneston 6

Dogs #48-53. I received a tip that there were some dogs in the sun without water at a residence in Barneston.

When I got there, I found 6 eight week old puppies in a 1.5x2’wire kennel outside. The kennel had no tarp or topper on it, and the pups had endured storm after storm. The kennel floor was solid feces and urine, the pups were stacked on top of each other, as there was not enough room, and although they had shade in the morning, afternoons they were in direct sunlight. They had been without water for two days. It was 108 heat index on the day I arrived. They are underweight. Their little hip bones stick out. They had never been wormed of course. Never vaccinated.

My first instinct was to call the sheriff as I have done so many times in the past. But then I was afraid the owner would get a warning, and I would have to leave the pups behind, only to become the next generation of messed up dogs!

I first offered to bring a bigger kennel, food, etc. etc. But then on the way home I called her back and asked if she would just relinquish the pups. She did so willingly. Whew…..

My vet is so wonderful. She has ordered my own case of vaccinations at her cost, and will store them for me, so we can just bring the pups in when needed! I have wormer already and wormed them. She didn't charge me an office visit. We are still battling diarrhea. A few of them have sty’s in their eyes, but appear quite healthy. One could barely walk, his muscles had atrophied from poor nutrition and not being able to stand. The other pups were always standing on him! They are all starting to recover and are doing well.

I still need to spay/neuter them. I’ve made a public plea for foster homes and donations. I have found four new foster homes and after surgery the pups will be distributed.
I’m still hoping to get donations, as their surgery will be a large expense with so many at one time.

I’ve asked the owner to let me spay the mother dog so this breeding cycle ends. There are six dogs in the home and none are spayed or neutered! She was very hesitant and agreed but wants to wait a few months. I want to do it right away! So I will continue to work with the owner.

Mitzi and Bear 2

Dogs #54-55. I am thrilled to report we were able to rescue Bear, a black lab/Chow mix from a chain today, and his canine sister Mitzi too. Bear came to my attention last December, but it took a while to find a foster home for him. Then the people went and got another dog named Mitzi. Both were going to be taken to a very high kill rural shelter next week, but thankfully a foster home came forward for them. So today is the first day of the rest of their lives. They are getting to stay together too. Bear turned out to be a big old teddy bear and a real lover. Sadly though, he is heartworm positive, so he has some rough times ahead, but he was so happy to be with his new foster Mom Erin.

Dogs #56-67.

June 16th, McMinnville, TN: 9 penned puppies & 2 chained dogs

A call of help came from an owner one day who was unable to provide proper shelter, food, and healthcare for their 11 dogs. The situation started to get out of hand almost a year ago, when one of the chained dogs gave birth to a litter of 14 puppies, five of which did not survive. Furthermore, the owner had chained a black female lab (Katie) to a doghouse with the belief that it was better to chain a dog rather than getting hit by a car or wandering around the neighborhood. In order to keep control of the remaining 9 puppies, a pen was constructed. For the past year, all 11 dogs had been living in filth and disease. It was heartbreaking to see the puppies run to try and protect themselves when it rained. Their “pen” consisted of pales of dirty water, dog houses torn apart. The puppies were covered in a mixture of mud and feces. After complaints, two wonderful angels stepped into the picture, realized the critical situation and made a plea for help.

Driving from Indianapolis to Mcminnville, a whole day was spent taking each dog of the chain or out of the pen and bathing them. They were the most precious babies- so afraid of what was happening and yet so miserable with the life they were living. The owner agreed to surrender all of the dogs. The next day, all the dogs were taken to the clinic where they were neutered/spayed, vaccinated, and given preventative treatment. Unfortunately, the two dogs that were chained (Katie the lab and the great pry momma) were heartworm positive. All 11 were infested with fleas, ticks, hookworm, roundworm-you name it, they had it.

After getting them vaccinated and boarded, they were ready for adoption. Both heartworm positive dogs were sponsored and fostered, leaving only nine. Local rescues stepped forward to place the dogs since I had no place to put them, which was amazing considering the amount of dogs needing fosters. I am very grateful.

Below is the movie clip of the dogs while we were finding homes for them:

Angel 2

Angel 3

Dog #68.

This is Angel Baby. She was given a beautiful name, but not a beautiful life. Angel Baby has been chained since whe was a small pup because her caretaker could not housetrain her. The caretaker did not get help with proper training for Angel or become self educated on how to train a pup, so.....out on the chain she went, never to return to the indoors again.

Angel Baby has suffered dog attacks, chemical burns, and continued neglect while living chained, and helpless out in the elements of the heat and cold for almost 2 years. Angel has infection in her soft scar tissue that is as a result of the chemical burns, ear mites, hook worms, whip worms, is extremely underweight and was infested with fleas.

Angel has recently been released from her chain and has been to the vet and received medication for the infection and worms, and is now eating 'Timberwolf' food to help with her nutrition and weight gain. Angel Baby is in a loving foster home where she has flourished in just a few short days. Angel no longer has to be fearful of what lurks behind her. Angel Baby now knows a loving hand, a soft caring voice and has everything she needs to flourish and become a wonderful companion. Angel Baby IS as beautiful as her name and Dogs Deserve Better promises to give her the beautiful life she deserves.

Dog #69-70.

Ozzie - Intake date 7/13/10
Here is the long version of the story
http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16917763

Ozzie is a nine year Siberian who until a a few weeks ago, lived his entire life on a chain. He was seized by animal control as in addition to being chained - he had a huge tumor in his leg that had not been tended to. Ozzie landed at a local shelter. They were going to euthanize him due to the tumor and behavior issues identified during temperment testing (food aggression, aggression towards small dogs and cats). Thankfully, the shelter reached out to DDB.

Ozzie is now in foster care where he shares his home peacefully with dogs of all sizes and cats. He lets the other dogs eat out of his food bowl.

Our vet biopsied the tumor. It is malignant and too large to be removed. Howver, the cancer has not spread and is a slow growth cancer. As a result, the vet recommended removal of Ozzie's leg - to eliminate the spread of the cancer. The surgery was completed on Wednesday, 7/21 and Ozzie is recovering well!

Lassie - Intake date - 7/20/10
http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16958165
This sweet girl is another one transferred to us from a local shelter after coming from the same circumstance as Ozzie (chained for life). She appears to be a Husky mix, approximately two years old and weighs 45 lbs.

Lassie has grown up on a chain - as a result, she is undersocialized/shy with humans - but loves the company of other dogs! It is very sad - she does not know how to play. If you throw a ball for her - she drops to the ground in fear.

Lassie is already coming out of her shell a bit at her foster home - so we are hopeful that as time goes by - she will learn to trust her two-legged pack members as she does with her canine companions.

Stay tuned for updates as we get to know Lassie better. We do know that she will need another dog or two in her new home - and will need to attend group basic obedience classes for socialization and confidence building. A fenced in yard would not be such a bad idea either.

Floyd 3

Dogs #71. Floyd's story started in GA. I got a call from a friend saying there is a chained dog that is skinny and out in the heat. I arrived and found a very skinny black lab pup. He had no food, water and a small dog house that he could not fit in. He was out in the heat and he was a black dog. I knew if I did not contact the owners right away, this pup was going to die in this heat. I knocked on the door. I was a little scared because this was my very first case as a DDB Rep. The owner was very nice and told me she could not afford to take care of him and and was trying to find a rescue for him. She said she didn't want to take him to the spca because she is worried they would put him to sleep. I offered to take the dog with me. I named him Floyd. He was my first foster dog. I gave Floyd a bath and encouraged him to eat and drink as much as he wanted for the 2 weeks I had him. Floyd was posted on DDB's FaceBook site. I immediately received a bunch of inquires on him. I was undecided until Tami forwarded an email to me regarding a reference for one of the adoption applicants. I took Floyd to meet Michele and Jay and it was love at first site. He immediately took to them. We then had Floyd vetted and I took him to his new home on 7/21/2010. While I was so sad to see Floyd go, I know he is in a great home with 2 people that love him and give him as much attention as he needs. I am also thankful that the foster family posts pictures of Floyd in his new home and he looks so happy!!!

Chi 3

Chi 2

Dogs #72-77. Received a call from a neighbor on Friday about 5 chi's who lived in a tiny fenced area. There were 4 females and 1 male and 2 of the females were pregnant. The "owners" claimed the dogs did not belong to them and just kept them safe until someone could get them. Once I arrived to the property, they let the dogs out into the yard area and it took 2 hours to catch these poor dogs. The "owners" fed these dogs menudo with jalapeno peppers and other slop (picture of slop bowl attached).

Once I was able to catch all 5 dogs and place them safely in a crate, I transported them to a great Chihuahua rescue who specializes in the abused and neglected Chi's. I received a report from her today and she is still unable to touch them.. They do not trust humans at all.. This is such a sad case of serious neglect.

Dogs #78. Stitch - I got the call late on Tuesday night, saying they were moving the next day, and the man who was supposed to take his dog had backed out. I asked, what kind of dog? A spitz mix...oh, a little dog. I thought to myself, probably not on a chain, but I'll see if I can help anyway. "Is the dog fixed?" No...hmmm...red flag.

"Is the dog outside or inside?" Outside, on a chain.

"I'll be right there."

As quickly as that, I added another packmate to my foster menagerie, putting me at seven. Stitch is a great little guy, still in need of much housetraining work, and still panting virtually nonstop, triggering my boyfriend's nickname for him, "Choo Choo Train." We'll get him fixed up and on to a better life, one where he can be the lap dog he truly longs to be inside his furry little face.

linus and snowball

Linus and Snowball after

Dog #80-81. If fate had its way, Linus and Snowball would be spending their days chained to dirty parts a junkyard. Linus, 12 years old, and son Snowball, five were placed in a junkyard due to their owner’s separation. Living in filth, Linus and Snowball only had each other.

When both were rescued, they were severely dehydrated and matted. It was a miracle that Linus and Snowball lived through those five grueling months without any shelter in the dead of summer.

BEFORE-- This is where the miracle of their rescue really begins. After word got from Mindy Welch in Southern Indiana about two Chow Chows needing immediate help, a wonderful couple from Carmel, IN came forth, offering to temporarily foster Linus & Snowball, giving DDB time to find a more permanent solution. One thing not mentioned yet is very important as too why the couple, Trudie & John, are heroes. They met Mindy and picked up Linus and Snowball on the weekend of July 4th (Saturday night to be exact), saw their condition, immediately called the vet, had both chows vetted and groomed that night! Unfortunately, Linus tested positive for heartworm. On top of already caring for two beautiful Chows, traveling out of state on a weekly basis, Trudie and John did not think twice about taking Linus and Snowball into their home and giving them the love every dog deserves. Not less than a week, Trudie & John’s prayer for Linus and Snowball became reality. A family, and Chow Chow lovers, heard of Linus and Snowball, contacted Trudie and John and the rest is history!
They are now resting in a wonderful home with two other chows to call family. Linus will be continuing heartworm treatment and full recovery is expected.

AFTER--A very special thanks to: Mindy Welch, Delores Blakely, Animal Medical Center (Indianapolis, IN), Companion Animal Hospital (Carmel, IN), Dr. Shay @ Castleton Pet Clinic (Indianapolis), and Dogs Deserve Better

A very special thank you to Mindy Welsh and Trudie and John Mintzer, with whom the rescue of Linus and Snowball could never have taken place.

Dog #82. While I was picking up the chihuahua puppies, my volunteer went way back on the property behind some out buildings and found this dog we named Jester. There must be 8 more in the house. But this dog is super skinny, and had no water. It was almost 100 degrees. The owners were late in getting back to us, so it gave us time to look around. We were captured by this dogs sweet temperament. Although he is not neutered, he appears in fairly good health, other than being underweight. I gave them the choice of releasing the dog, or me calling the sheriff!!

Boyd chained

Boyd unchained

Dog #83. The first time I saw Boyd's picture, he was chained to a plastic barrel in what looked like an overgrown farm somewhere in Missouri on a hot summer day. And like all dog lovers, your heart just ached to see such a loving creature in such a desperate situation. One look into those big lonely eyes, you could see how much Boyd wanted to give love and wanted to receive love.

Boyd’s owner became physically disabled which resulted in not being able to care for the loving beagle. His owners surrendered him to DDB knowing that life on a chain wasn’t any kind of life to live.

So, a month and many, many, many miles later, Boyd was transported to here to me in Indianapolis where he received vetting and a much needed bath and flea treatment! Less than a week later, a wonderful lady agreed to foster Boyd and I am happy to say she is in Love with him, she has renamed him Cooper and he is now living the good life!

A Dog A Day

Day 58: Aug 1, 2010.

tank before

tank after

Dog #85. Tank - One dog that was claimed to be a wildly aggressive German Shepherd and one lanky young girl fighting for his life.

Tank’s story starts out badly. Chained by a 5 foot, padlocked heavy chain to a ramshackle dog house baking in the sun. No water in sight and only a mud hole for company. Tank probably wondered why his toenails were so long and uncomfortable, why no one would brush him, or why every time he went to lie down his prong collar would stab into his neck. Most of all, he probably wondered why he was forced to live his life in loneliness and misery, away from his pack he so longed to be with.

Tank’s owners put him up for sale on Craigslist. “Vicious Dog,” they said. “Only one person is able to touch him,” they said. “Buyer Beware” they said. Enter lanky young girl.

I check Craigslist everyday for cases like this and Tank was the single worst case I had ever seen. I immediately emailed the owners offering them help to get Tank to any rescue that would take him. I received no response, so I emailed again. I sent a total of 4 messages before I decided on a different approach.

I sent an email to Marie Belanger from DDB. I had always been a huge fan of the organization and thought…”if anyone can help, DDB can.” Marie put me in touch with a fantastic aggressive GSD rescue based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The gentleman who ran this rescue called the owners and didn’t get much further than I did. I decided to change approaches once again. I gave myself a new email address and a brand new name. Tank’s owners very much liked “Sarah” and I received a response right away. We arranged a time to pick Tank up and I arranged a transport to Elizabethtown, KY to Kentucky Working K9’s, a rescue that volunteered to take Tank and rehabilitate him, as he was so aggressive.

I arrived to Tank’s home and found a terrible sight. He really was in the same situation that was portrayed in his photos. Filthy corner of the yard, chained with the heaviest chain I’d ever seen a living being attached to. I was told not to approach him myself, so I let the owners unhook him and take him to my car. After about 15 minutes of them getting close to Tank then running away, someone was finally able to slip the muzzle on and load him into my car. I never saw a reason for their behavior, Tank never made an aggressive move in my time spent at the home.

Eventually, he was loaded into my car without so much as a word from the owners and we were on our way.

We stopped just inside Kentucky for a potty break. While walking Tank, I crouched down to see if he would tolerate my touch. He perked up to a friendly pet and buried his head in my lap, subsequently knocking me over! His tail was wagging and he gave a high-pitched whine. Only then did I notice that his muzzle was bleeding. The muzzle the owners put on him was cutting into his skin and causing it to bleed pretty badly. It was in that moment that I decided Tank would not endure hell any longer. He was with me, he was safe and he would be from now on. I removed Tank’s muzzle.

“Vicious Dog” they said. “Only one person is able to touch him,” they said. “Buyer Beware” they said. Enter lanky young girl.

I have never experienced such a wonderful moment in all my life as when that muzzle was removed. That “wildly aggressive German Shepherd” showered me with kisses and playful tail wagging. We trotted back to the car and he hopped right in, ready to hang his head out the window and live life like a real dog for the first time in a long time.

We arrived at the transfer destination a few hours later. To my dismay, there was another person out walking their dog and there were a few feral cats hanging around. I had no idea how Tank would react, but he handled everything like a true gentleman with hardly any attention paid to either one.

The receiving rescue arrived, loaded him up and I waved a bittersweet goodbye to my new friend Tank. He of course, turned out to be a very well behaved, loving dog. The only thing he needed was to get off of his chain. Tank now has a loving new home with a single schoolteacher and I couldn’t be more proud.

The sentence “Dogs Deserve Better” has a much deeper meaning to me now. After my experience with Tank, I knew I couldn’t idly sit by anymore while chained and penned dogs suffer. Thanks to Tank, I am the new Dayton, OH representative for Dogs Deserve Better.

I will always remember Tank, not only for the dog he has become, but for the person he has led me to become. Thank you Tank, and thank you Dogs Deserve Better, my life is forever changed.

Norman 1

Norman 2

Dog #87. I received a phone call from a woman wanting to know if I could help her with fencing to get her dog off of the chain after she had been notified that Marion, Indiana has a 3 hour per day tethering limit. I loaded up my camera and a clipboard with a fencing application but, when I arrived I met Norman, a big strong 5 year old Yellow Lab mix who had only been off of the chain long enough to get a rabies vaccination and a heart worm test every year. Both of his caretakers were Seniors and had to have a relative come feed Norm everyday because when they went out, he would jump up with excitement too see them, and they were afraid he would hurt them. I considered the fencing and discussed it with her. We soon realized that it might not be a good idea since he would surely knock anyone down who came into his area and, they told me he could never go into the home since the husband has had a stroke and Norm is so big and strong.

So, I told her I would try to find Norm a home where he can be inside as part of a Family and, I left them to consider this. The next day they called me and said, yes, that would probably be best. The rest is history and Norm is a chained Dog no more!

Mercedes 1

Mercedes 6

Dog #88. I rescued "Mercedes" yesterday, and I think she is less than a year old and a border collie mix. She is small, under 50 pounds. I know she has been chained for the last 3 months, and I would bet most of her life. She was chained at the same place as Coco( chained his whole life, 10 years) and Diamond (chained 8 years), the 2 dogs I rescued last Sept from this same family.

I am going back this week sometime to get the big wooden doghouse (built for Coco and it was his spot where Mercedes was chained) and a dogaloo that was Diamond's doghouse. The new relinquishment contract was created because of this man, and I hope I never have to go back there because of another dog!

Mercedes is learning not to jump on me like most chained dogs do when approached. She walks very well on a leash with just a regular collar after she gets the jumping out of her system. She is very scared and has mostly been growly towards my other dogs, but was in heat when spayed last week and I think is having a hard time hormonally, too. Today she played with Harvey, one of my pittie rescues that is about 3 months old. They played all afternoon, so Mercedes is learning how to enjoy life finally. She is sweet and does well in her crate at night. No accidents in the house yet, either. Very calm around my horses, so I am thinking border collie mix. Your friendly neighborhood Pit Bull lover,

Hiltie 3

Hiltie 2

Dog #89. I got an email from Dogs Deserve Better that there was a dog chained up to a tree in Wilbraham MA. I went to check on the dog. Hilti has been either caged or chained 24/7. Her mom divorced and moved from Va to MA and with her small child just left Hiltie ignored by a tree on a chain. Fortunately Hilti's personality is wonderful. She is sweet, respectful, fun and energetic to say the least.

She has been vetted this week and she is already spayed. I need a loving home for her where her people will exercise her and pay attention to her. She is playful as can be. If you are looking for a 4 year old with a ton of energy and love to give, she is for you. She knows sit and down and I have begun leash training. A run would serve a great purpose for 15 minutes in the beginning of a walk to drain the 4 years of neglect which shows itself as energy overload.

Because she is not in good shape, she is pooped out in 15 minutes. She loves little kids and all people and has begun rehabilitation at Pondview Kennel in East Nassau NY with Bob Burns on Monday July 5. We would like her to be more dog tolerant so that she isn't limited to an owner who has no other pets. That would be the long term goal. She has learned to walk on a leash, focus on her human instead of birds, squirrels and chipmunks and will sit patiently until the human is ready to walk.

If you are interested in her or know someone that would give her a home, please email me or call me. Robin@robinbudin.com or 413 627.3404

Some kids were doing a youth mission by helping this family with their roof etc. They saw the dead puppy and were devastated. They buried the puppy and bought food and water to give to the puppies. The lethargic puppies perked up after a few hours. Amazing what food and water can do! The adults running the mission were concerned about leaving the puppies and at the same time felt like they had asked to come into their home to help these people so they were adamant about not reporting them to AC. The woman who called me explained as much as she agreed that these people deserved no food or water she could not report it. I did not want to turn her away because she would not report it and let the puppies die in some unknown place as I had not been out there. We found temp foster for them and she picked them up. The woman swore the puppies had food and water everyday, even if they did they turn their water buckets over all the time and in 101 degree temps many dogs and puppies are dying in SC from not having water! The woman has agreed to let us spay the mother who wanders around in the country and has had 3 litters!!! The black and white puppy went to a rescue in Durham, NC and already had an interested adopter. The other 2 are going to CT next weekend and are doing much better in their temp foster situation.

She petted me on the head and talked to me. She had a very loving voice. Then she went away, into my human's house. I was scared for her. When she came back she told me I wouldn't have to suffer anymore. She took the chain off of me and put me in her car. It was a long drive to her house but she gave me food and more water. She took my heavy collar off and put medicine on my neck where my collar cut me. I thought I was dreaming but it got better! When we got to her house, she had lots of doggie friends for me to play with. We all got to be inside! She let me lay on her bed and watch TV with her on the couch. I got to eat everyday!!! And I always had water! She took me to the vet and they said I would always have a scar on my neck but I would be okay. I knew I would be okay too : ) Thanks to Dogs Deserve Better, I have a new life! I am only one year old and have so much love to give. 'Tootsie' made a 'bed' under the deck where she lived for quite sometime. The young lady was getting ready to move and could not take Tootsie with her and feared for what may happen. None of us wanted to let this young lady down but we especially didn't want to let Tootsie down. After my husband emailed me her photos I asked him to go back and get her and take her to the vet immediately where she would be spayed, heart-worm tested, de-wormed, vaccinated, given flea treatment, and micro-chipped. In less than 2 days, we raised enough money to have Tootsie vetted and boarded for several days. She will be going to her foster home on Friday.

Ralph

Dog #102. If one were to glance over the 2 acres of land, Ralph would not catch someone’s eye. Not because of his appearance, but because his owners had chosen to keep Ralph in the farthest part of the yard, “out of sight, out of mind.” An invisible fence was working years before, yet Ralph had managed to get out several times. So.... on the chain he went.

For the past five years, Ralph has been chained to his little doghouse through harsh winters, wet springs, and humid summers. He slept in a small little dog house with the neighborhood cat. Like clockwork, the cat would run over to Ralph in the evening, sit on top of the doghouse, and stay until morning. As with many chained dogs, Ralph was so gentle and sweet, only looking for some attention.

Finally, a sweet loving neighbor could not stand looking at poor Ralph. She contacted Dogs Deserve Better, a letter was sent out with no response. Speaking with the owners made one realize that chaining a dog had never crossed their mind as being abusive.

We were able to get the fence up and working and Ralph has yet to get out of the yard and unto the busy streets. Ralph, after 5 years, is off the chain.

The ultimate goal is to get Ralph into the home and hopefully with a little more education and interaction, his owners will agree.

A Very Special Thanks to
Jamie Thompson, Beachgrove Animal Hospital, & Dogs Deserve Better

A Very Very Speacial Thanks to Kay. Without your compassion and love for animals, Ralph would still be on a chain. Thank you so much

King before

King after

Dog #103. This is King they say he is 8 years old. He has lived in this HELL HOLE for his whole life 200 ft from his owners house! Bonnie an amazing volunteer for Dogs Deserve Better and a member of our local Committee for Responsible Pet Ownership discovered King and the neighbor's dog JoJo who has lived chained in the hot SC sun his whole life. Bonnie befriended King's owner and would visit a couple times a week taking him out and loving on him, bringing him a new dog house and food. The owner said he didn't know dogs needed to be fed daily??????? Long story short Bonnie also started visiting JoJo the neighbor dog, but had a blow out with JoJo's owners when they asked her not to give the pitiful chained and lonely dog treats. She called AC and they had to get rabies shots, RIDICULOUS that it is legal for them to live this way. After the blow out, both neighbors, who are related, put no trespassing signs in their yards. Bonnie has been devastated, dreaming about these pitiful dogs. It's heartbreaking thinking about them waiting for her and her unable to visit. Linda an awesome passionate volunteer and I went to talk to King's owners we brought $60 and kissed up, in turn he gave us King for $30!!!!! I talked to him about how hard it is to care for a dog and he was doing the right thing, he is older so I really don't think he will get another dog. I think he would have given him up without money after talking to him. King is extremely thin it is hard to tell with long fur but you you can feel every bone. Today he had 3 inches of water in a paint bucket. I have no idea how long it has been since he had water or food??? Now we will go to Jo Jo's house and ask if we can please build a fence for him. I know they will not give him up, he's a GUARD dog! Yeah right, the dog wants love so bad he was barking and trying to get our attention when we were getting King, very pitiful. Fingers crossed they will not slam the door on us and we can at least free Jo Jo from life on a chain by building a fence. King is a shepherd mix very GSD looking. He has a temp foster, but will need a rescue if you can please crosspost to all contacts. If he is heart worm positive we will raise money to have him treated if we can just get him into a great home/ foster/ rescue.

Willow after 1

Willow after 2

Dog #104. Here is Willow, a beautiful black lab rescued Sunday Aug. 8th after living on a chain and then almost being euthanized in a shelter. I'll send after photos of him after his adoption last week. Willow only weighed 34 pounds when he was rescued after being abandoned and nearly starved. Here are some new "after" pictures of Willow. He sat in the Grant County shelter and was going to be euthanized last Monday. Many people came forward to help Willow, and a wonderful family in Ohio adopted him last week. Willow is happy and now weighs about 50 lbs.and loves his new family. His before picture is one of the saddest I've seen, with a huge chain dragging on the ground. Now he enjoys leash walks and playing with his canine sister Bailey.

Harmony 1

Harmony 2

Harmony 3

Dog #109. Mother and 5 puppies rescued!! York County SC Poor mother dog was chained with infected ears and an infected neck. She is a sweetie and needs a great home as well as the puppies. The puppies bellies are not round from worms as they only had a hook worm egg but no worms?? So it was total starvation!!! Their gums were white. How they were even found is amazing, one little hero puppy ran out to the road causing the a concerned vehicle to stop . Luckily, it was DIane a woman who adopted a boxer from our area that was almost dead when she was found. Diane is being recruited!!! She stopped, knocked on the door, brought back food when no one answered. I spoke with her and she lived by the situation and also close to one of our main super energetic rescuers, Linda. Linda and Diane continued several time to go over there for the next 2 days finally the guy answered the door and they took the puppies. That wasn't enough we wanted the mama too. Diane went back and was able to get him to surrender the mother too. The last pictures show them at Linda's house with her fabulous dog loving husband surrounded by lots of happy tails!!!! The mother dog will go into her permenant foster on Friday and we are still looking for rescue for the puppies. If interested in the puppies or mother please contact adogfriend@gmail.com
