Greenwood,
IN -- Charges will not be filed against a Greenwood resident whose
dog jumped out of a window and hanged itself this week.
But
the Johnson County Humane Society said the incident serves as a
good reminder about the way homeowners should care for their animals.
On
Monday, deputies were called to Lot 606 in Friendly Village mobile
home park, 4377 W. County Line Road, on a report of a dog hanging
from a window. A neighbor called police. The neighbor cut the dog
free, but it already was dead.
Johnson
County Sheriff's Sgt. Tom Krukemeier's report said the dog had been
tied with a rope around the neck to a bed inside the mobile home.
The
dog apparently jumped out an open window and choked to death.
Johnson
County Animal Control Warden Shawn P. Donovan investigated the incident.
He called it "tragic and disturbing" in a news release
but said it does not warrant the filing of charges.
Friendly
Village's manager told investigators the dog was the second to die
at the residence after jumping out an open window.
The
resident could not be reached for comment. The neighbor declined
to be interviewed.
Marian
Pohley, executive director of Humane Society of Johnson County,
said pet owners should exercise caution when tethering an animal.
"In
a perfect world, it would never happen. But sometimes, every animal
gets tied up," Pohley said.
There
are other ways to confine dogs.
"We
encourage people to consider a fenced area, where the animal can
be loose but contained," she said. "Anything is preferable
to tying an animal." Fenced areas or electronic or invisible
fencing are options.
