Recap of Chain Off 2011, Freedom for Chained Dogs

Deana Whitfield chained outside the San Bernardino Superior Court in San Bernardino, CA.

Although our website shows 81 participants in our annual nationwide 2011 Chain Off event, the actual number was indeed much higher, for in Pennsylvania alone, on the state Capitol steps where last year founder Tamira Thayne spent 54 days, this year 40 more people came to stand beside her. It was truly a site to behold! From the steps of Harrisburg PA to Guam where volunteer Mindy Larson, spent 24 hours chained to a dog house alone, we can truly say that people who love dogs never give up on raising awareness for them. We hope you'll join us next year! It chain-ges you as a person, gives you strength, and true insight into how these dogs live every single day of their lives.

Money raised from Chain Off: Our goal was $30,000, this year we've only raised $12,925 so far! A HUGE thanks to long-time chainee Rhonda Sims for her 'win' again this year of biggest fundraiser, raising over $4000 for DDB's work for chained dogs! Thank you, Rhonda!

There's still time to your favorite chainee at:

We'd like to thank each and every person who participated in an event, donated and/or fundraised. We couldn't do this without you all and appreciate your dedication to bringing awareness to these silent sufferers.

We look forward to an even more successful Chain Off 2012! With your continued support and enthusiasm, we will no doubt be successful in spreading awareness and hope.

Check Out What's Happening at the Good Newz Rehab Center

Office Manager Elaine Peachey and Tamira Thayne are now on the ground living on the property with the dogs. They are currently working 14 hour days trying to get the facility off the ground, and have already been asked to take about 250 dogs just since the move! They have struggled with phone connection and have an ongoing internet issue, as the only available internet there is satellite, which is giving them horrendous problems.

The two dog rooms of the house are still covered in carpeting which is just not working, and they await rubber flooring which has been ordered before they can take in any more dogs. Even though amazing progress has transpired in the past three weeks, things are tough in these initial phases of development, with little funding and little manpower. They wish to thank everyone for standing with them, and thank everyone who has continued to donate to bring about the chain-ge we all want to see. Big things happen one baby step at a time!

The good newz is that even with being open for less than a month, the Good Newz Rehab Center has 3 separate fenced areas for the rescued dogs. A huge thank you to all the volunteers, this would have been impossible without your help. There have been so many volunteers, too many to name, but know that each of you have contributed to making this center a reality.

Also, thank you to all the sponsors and companies that have made donations! The center, and especially the dogs, appreciate all the items donated and are especially enjoying the pools.

Check out updated information and a list of badly needed items for the center at:
http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/ddbcenter.html

In order for the center to continue to grow, we still need your help. We need help in the form of volunteers and especially donations. If you have not yet donated to our cause, please find it in your heart to do so now. These and so many more dogs are depending on us to provide them with the life they always deserved. No donation is too small and all are so greatly appreciated.

Remember Sugar, One of the Dogs Founder Tamira Thayne was Charged with Trespassing for Feeding?

Sugar with her forever family.

Sugar before rescue

Remember Sugar, one of the dogs founder Tamira Thayne was charged with trespassing for feeding in subzero wind chills? Well, she was later given up to the organization, has been adopted, and today we got the most amazing letter from her new mom! What a wonderful feeling, and really, what this org is meant to create; loving, inside homes and FAMILIES for these dogs.

"Just a quick update on Sugar.... Sugar has been part of our family now for 7 months. She is a work in progress...I would never have imagined that she would be THE BIGGEST cuddle-bug ever. She is completely different today than she was a few months ago. I cannot stress how much she enjoys running and car rides, swimming and just hanging out with us. It will forever be in her nature to be shy with the big boys, and will visit company at our house at her own pace, but I never leash her in the yard--she pretty much just hangs around and explores and hunts for chipmunks in the woods, so I do keep my eye on her as she get carried away with the hunting! She is a good listener with commands and we love her to pieces. I guess you just never know the potential that is at the end of those chains do you? So glad you never gave up on saving her.... it's not the easiest thing to take a rescue and try to undo what has been done, but with patience(a lot of patience), understanding, excercise, not rushing expectations and love.... well, it's a great feeling to look at her and see her peaceful and happy--not dirty and carrying around an empty dog bowl in subzero weather dragging the chain that was holding her back from being who she really is...a family house dog who is so loved--as you can see in the attached pictures. Hope all is well.... by the way, working on getting an owner to release his Beagle to me--sweet boy!"

Meet Prescott, DDB's First Rescue in Guam.

Prescott after some vetting and TLC.

This is Prescott the day Mindy rescued him.

This poor boy, now named Prescott, showed up on the Talofofo Mayor's office steps on July 1st. He had a long rope tied tightly around his neck that had begun to embed. Our volunteer, Mindy Larson jumped in to action and rescued Prescott and is fostering him at her home.

Prescott is a fighter who chewed his way loose and found his way right to some folks that that he knew would contact DDB.

Prescott is suffering from Demodex Mange, an ear infection and will require many vet appointments. Please donate to his vetting care:

Update from Mindy: Two weeks into foster care and Prescott is doing so much better!! He has more energy, more smiles, and is venturing out quite a bit more. He is on a regular sleep schedule and is learning to play with the other dogs. He has been to the beach and the dog park and enjoyed checking out these new places.

Thank you Mindy for your hard work and dedication to getting Prescott the care and love he deserves.
