2003 "Have a Heart for Chained Dogs"
Report from Gainesville, Florida

The event went well. We are putting together a package of photos, newspaper coverage clippings, video of news segment and our group' press releases on the event. We were well-received and it went off without a hitch. We also received an email from a citizen in our neighborhood thanking us.

Dogs Deserve Better went GREAT!!!!

On Saturday the officers of Animal Activists of Alachua visited approximately 40 tethered dogs in Alachua county. We dispensed the Valentine's that were made at the last meeting, which consisted of a veg dog biscuit and some literature for the tethered dog's "guardian". AAA traveled through the neighborhoods in Vegetarian Event's Mobile Video Theatre, which played a continuous loop of PETA's public service announcement featuring Michael Strahan of the New York Giants. Hay was also dispensed for bedding.

TV 20 and an photographer from the Gainesville Sun accompanied us. AAA had about a three min segment on the 6 o'clock news and we showed up on the front page of the local section.

*Thank you to all our volunteers who generously gave their time to put together the Valentine's packages; the dogs loved them!
**Extra special thanks to Chas for letting us ride in style in his new Mobile Video Theatre (MVT), a customized truck with TV screens fitted into the sides which he debuted at this event.
***Thanks also to Earth Pets who donated the veg dog biscuits!

Subject: Pleasant Street District

I'm writing to applaud your weekend efforts in my neighborhood. There are dozens of miserable dogs chained to objects in the Pleasant treet Historic District, and my wife and I are happy to learn of your efforts. Both our neighbors to the north and south have large dogs on chains that permit them to move about five feet. One is chained to concrete blocks and gets care about once a week, if that. We've talked with the neighbors but I'm afraid it was to no avail. Your efforts sound like steps in the right direction. Thanks.
Sincerely,
J.K.
