Tammy picking up the two dogs in West Virginia, February 21, 2003. They are so beautiful, and young! Both need to be housetrained, vetted and spayed/neutered, and then the search for a home will begin. If you'd like to donate to help with their vet bills, that would be great! 2003 "Have a Heart for Chained Dogs"
Report from Ohio

I only passed out three Valentine's. Here's why:

I have a sad tale to tell you. I volunteered to deliver valentines to chained dogs for Dogs Deserve Better. The third house we stopped at had a dog chained to the porch with no shelter and another dog chained to a doghouse with a big hole in the side, and he had wet blankets inside the doghouse (which was also too small for him). Mud all around, and trash. I will have pictures later in the week.

I knocked on the door and told them they had to bring both dogs into the house because they were breaking the law allowing them to live in these conditions. They said they couldn't. I told them they would be going to court and they turned the dogs over to me. Here is the problem. We took the dogs to be boarded at the vet but I have to pay the vet bill and I can't afford much. There is no where to take these dogs. I can't bring them home, I have 7 pets here, one of which is a small terrier who is quick to react and attack if things don't go his way.

The one that was in the dog house is a rottie lab mix and a big baby. He was laying upside down in my lap with his feet in the air. The other is VERY beautiful, marked like a St. Bernard, size of border collie, blue eyes. She is skin and bones. Also very sweet, shy, and terrified. She would make someone a wonderful pet.

The lab mix is very friendly, not scared. I have a feeling he could be trained to do about anything.

These dogs were covered with poo and smelled very strongly of cat urine. They got in my back seat and rubbed all over it trying to get the icy rain, poo, and cat pee off of them. There are poo tracks all over my back seat but you can't smell the poo because the cat pee smell is so overpowering. I was gagging in the car. I will have to have my car detailed or send it to the
junk heap.

I am in big trouble here. I need help ASAP. It will cost me nine dollars for every day they stay at the vet, plus worming and bordetella shots, and the most important thing of all.....a BATH! Probably two or THREE baths.

I need to find a place for them right away. From now on I am sticking to doing my webpage and the petfinder page for Lawrence County Humane Society and to fighting puppymills. I am a foster flunky (the terrier was supposed to be a foster....NOT...he is here to stay). I am a Dogs Deserve Better volunteer flunky because I could not just leave the information and walk away and leave these two dogs in those conditions.

Thanks,
Jody Crowe

Update: I told Jody that rather than being a 'flunky' she was a success! She got two dogs off chains! I met her in West Virginia Friday, February 21, and brought the dogs here. She did a great job! Thank you, Jody. You were a saviour for these dogs. If you'd like to donate money for them to be spayed/neutered, it would be appreciated! Just put it's 'for the Ohio dogs' in the memo section.
